How to cancel any subscription: the complete guide

The simple way to cancel any subscription: find where you actually pay, cancel there, and keep access until the end of the period you paid for.

Canceling a subscription is easy once you know one thing: where the money actually leaves your account. Almost every subscription is billed in one of three places, and you cancel in the place that charges you, not inside the app itself. Find that place, cancel, and your access simply runs out at the end of the period you already paid for. This guide covers all three homes, plus how to dig out the subscriptions you have forgotten about.

Step 1: find out where you actually pay

Before you cancel anything, work out who is charging you, because that decides where the cancel button lives. A subscription almost always bills from one of three homes:

  • The app store, when you subscribed through an app on your phone (Apple bills iPhone and iPad subscriptions, Google bills Android ones).
  • The service directly, when you signed up on the company’s own website with your card or PayPal.
  • Your operator, when the charge rides on a phone, internet, or TV bill (a carrier or provider bundles the service and collects for it).

The rule for the rest of this guide is simple: cancel where you pay. Canceling inside the app, or deleting the app, does not stop the billing when the charge lives somewhere else.

Step 2: cancel where you pay

Once you know which home your subscription lives in, go straight there.

Billed by Apple (App Store)

On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name at the top, then tap Subscriptions. Pick the subscription and choose to cancel it. You can do the same on the web: sign in at account.apple.com and manage your subscriptions there. One Apple Account holds every App Store subscription you have, which makes it a fast place to audit.

Billed by Google (Google Play)

On Android, open the Google Play app, go to your subscriptions, select the one you want, and choose Cancel subscription. On any browser, the same list lives at play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions. Note that uninstalling the app does not cancel anything: the subscription keeps billing until you cancel it here.

Billed directly by the service

If you subscribed on the company’s own site, cancel in your account there, usually under a heading like Account, Membership, Billing, or Plan. If you cannot find it, search the company’s help pages for the word cancel. Keep the confirmation email as proof of the date.

Bundled with your phone or TV provider

Some subscriptions are added to a telecom or TV bill and collected by that provider. If the charge does not appear in your Apple or Google subscriptions and you have no direct account, check whether your carrier or TV package is billing it, and cancel through them.

The timing rule: cancel now, keep your access

For nearly every digital subscription, canceling stops the next charge but leaves your access running until the end of the period you already paid for. Apple and Google both work this way: cancel a monthly plan today and you keep it until the date it would have renewed, then it simply stops. That means there is no reason to wait for the last day. Cancel the moment you decide, and you lose nothing you have paid for. Waiting only risks the next charge slipping through.

Find the subscriptions you forgot

The subscriptions that cost you the most are the ones you no longer remember. Two passes catch almost all of them.

First, open your two store lists: Settings, your name, then Subscriptions on iPhone, and play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions for Google. Each shows every subscription billed through that store in one place.

Second, scan two or three months of bank and card statements for recurring charges. Statements catch what the stores miss: the services you pay directly, and anything bundled onto another bill. Anything you do not recognize or no longer use is a cancel. A two-to-three-month scan works well for monthly charges, but it’s a poor match for an annual subscription, which only shows up on one statement a year.

FAQ

Will I lose access the moment I cancel? No. For nearly all digital subscriptions, canceling stops the next payment but keeps your access until the end of the period you already paid for. Cancel early and you still get what you paid for.

How do I find all my subscriptions? Check your two store lists first (Apple under Settings, your name, then Subscriptions; Google at play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions), then scan two or three months of bank and card statements for the recurring charges the stores do not show.

Why does canceling in the app not work? Because the app is not always where you pay. If a subscription bills through Apple, Google, or your operator, deleting the app leaves the charge running. You have to cancel in the place that takes the money.

Can a service refuse to let me cancel online? It can make it awkward, but where a subscription is billed by Apple or Google you can always cancel from your account there, whatever the app says. For services billed directly, the cancel option is in your account on their site or through their support.
