If your MOT expires, you cannot legally drive or park your car on a public road, and you can be fined up to £1,000 if you are caught. There is no grace period: the certificate either has time left on it or it does not.
The penalty for driving without a valid MOT
Once the MOT runs out, the vehicle is off the road, full stop, whether you are driving it or it is simply parked on the street. Get caught and you can be prosecuted, with a fine of up to £1,000. It does not matter how close the car is to passing, or how long ago the certificate lapsed: the test either has time left or it does not.
The one legal exception: driving to a booked test
There are two, narrow situations where the law allows you to drive with an expired MOT: on the way to or from a garage for repair work, or driving to a pre-arranged MOT test appointment. Outside of those two specific journeys, the car needs to stay parked until it passes.
The insurance and tax knock-on
An expired MOT does not just stop you driving, it stops you taxing the car too: to renew your vehicle tax, you need to show a valid MOT that covers the period the tax starts. It is worth checking your insurance policy as well. Terms vary by insurer, but a car that is not legally roadworthy can complicate things if you ever need to make a claim, so it pays to keep the MOT current rather than find out the hard way.
Renew early without losing your date
You do not have to wait until the last day. You can book and pass your MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it is due and keep your existing renewal date: if your MOT runs out on 15 May, you can test any time from 16 April onwards and the new certificate will still expire on 15 May the following year. Test any earlier than that window and the date resets to your new pass instead.
