The federal tax filing deadline for 2026 is Wednesday, April 15, 2026. That is the date most individual taxpayers must file their 2025 federal income tax return and pay any tax owed, according to the IRS. When April 15 falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the IRS pushes the due date to the next business day, though 2026 needs no such adjustment since the 15th lands on a Wednesday.
The 2026 filing season at a glance
The IRS opened the 2026 filing season on January 26, 2026, when it began accepting and processing individual returns for tax year 2025. The agency expects about 164 million individual returns to be filed ahead of the April 15 deadline. Taxpayers who claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit, and who choose direct deposit with no other issues on their return, can expect their refund by around March 2, 2026. The season opening on January 26 isn’t necessarily the best day to actually file; most people are still waiting on a W-2 or 1099 at that point.
What happens if you miss the deadline
Two separate penalties can apply, and they interact rather than simply add up.
- Failure-to-file penalty: 5% of the unpaid tax for each month or partial month your return is late, up to a maximum of 25%. If your return is more than 60 days late, a minimum penalty applies: for a 2025 return due after December 31, 2025, that’s the lesser of $525 or 100% of the unpaid tax.
- Failure-to-pay penalty: 0.5% of the unpaid tax for each month or partial month it stays unpaid, also capped at 25%. With an approved IRS payment plan, this drops to 0.25% a month while the plan is active.
When both apply in the same month, the IRS reduces the failure-to-file penalty by the failure-to-pay amount, so the combined rate works out to 5% a month, not 5.5%.
An extension moves the paperwork deadline, not the payment one
Filing Form 4868 by April 15, 2026 buys you until October 15, 2026 to file your paperwork, but any tax you owe is still due April 15. See Tax extension deadline 2026 for how the extension actually works and what it does and doesn’t cover, and How are taxes due? for the payment methods themselves.

FAQ
Is the 2026 tax deadline definitely April 15? Yes. The IRS lists Wednesday, April 15, 2026 as the deadline to file and pay 2025 federal income tax for most individual taxpayers.
What if April 15 falls on a weekend or holiday? The IRS moves the due date to the next business day that isn’t a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday. That rule doesn’t come into play in 2026, since April 15 is a Wednesday.
Do I still owe money if I file for an extension? Yes. An extension only gives you more time to file the paperwork. Any tax you owe was still due on the original April 15 deadline, and interest plus the failure-to-pay penalty apply to whatever wasn’t paid by then.
What’s the penalty for filing late? Failure-to-file costs 5% of the unpaid tax per month, up to 25%. Failure-to-pay costs 0.5% per month, also up to 25%. The two combine to a 5% monthly rate when both apply, not their sum.
