A routine U.S. passport renewal takes 4 to 6 weeks once the State Department has your application, or 2 to 3 weeks with expedited service. Add mailing time on both ends, up to 2 weeks each way, and the real door-to-door wait runs roughly 8 to 10 weeks for routine service.

Current processing times

Routine processing takes 4 to 6 weeks. Expedited processing takes 2 to 3 weeks for an additional $60. Neither window includes the mail: it can take up to 2 weeks for your application to reach a passport agency (faster delivery is available for a fee), and up to 2 weeks for your new passport to reach you afterward (a 1 to 3 day express return is also available for a fee). If you’re traveling internationally within 14 calendar days, urgent travel service requires an in-person appointment at a passport agency, plus proof of that travel.

Online vs. mail renewal

Eligible U.S. citizens can renew online, for routine service only, at opr.travel.state.gov, the only official renewal site. You qualify if your most recent passport was valid for 10 years, is expiring within 1 year or expired less than 5 years ago, you’re 25 or older, none of your personal details have changed, you won’t be traveling internationally for at least 6 weeks from the date you apply, and you’ll be in a U.S. state or territory when you submit. Online renewals cannot be expedited. If you don’t meet every condition, you renew by mail or in person at a passport agency instead.

When to start

Because the total window runs 6 to 10 weeks depending on how you apply, start the moment you know you’ll need a renewal, not the week before a trip. Demand runs heaviest from late winter through summer, so processing slows down then. October through December tends to be calmer, if your timing is flexible.

The trip-validity trap

A passport that’s technically still valid can still get you turned away at check-in. Many countries, especially in Europe, require your passport to stay valid for at least 6 more months past your travel dates, not just past your return date. Renewing in time to legally hold a valid passport isn’t the same as renewing in time to meet that rule, so check your expiration date against your actual trip dates as soon as you start planning.
