The EU travel trap: valid isn’t always valid enough
An adult British passport is valid for 10 years from the date it’s issued. But “not expired” and “valid for travel to the EU” are two different tests. For Schengen area countries, GOV.UK’s entry requirements state your passport must “have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive” and “have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the date you plan to leave the Schengen area.” Crucially, the expiry date doesn’t need to sit within 10 years of the issue date, only the issue date itself has to be under 10 years old on arrival. A passport that looks fine on the cover can still get you turned away at the gate if it was issued too long ago or expires too close to your return date.
When to start
Given the 3-week standard turnaround, plus time to gather documents, take a compliant photo, and allow for any request for more information, starting a month or so before you need the passport is a comfortable margin. If you’re checking against the EU’s issue-date and 3-month rules rather than the UK expiry date, work those dates out before you book, not after.
