If your Texas vehicle registration has expired, you get five working days before you’re breaking the law: Texas lets you keep driving during that window without penalty. After that, driving on expired registration can bring a citation of up to $200.
The annual renewal cycle
Texas registers vehicles on an annual, 12-month cycle. Once a vehicle is registered, its expiration month stays fixed at every renewal after that, so you can predict your due date without waiting on a notice. TxDMV mails a paper renewal notice ahead of that date, unless you’ve opted into paperless delivery.
Renewing without the notice
A missing renewal notice doesn’t stop you from renewing. Texas only requires one of three identifiers: your prior year’s registration receipt, your plate number, or your VIN, plus a government-issued photo ID. Renew online at renew.txdmv.gov, by mail, in person at your county tax office or a substation, or through the Texas by Texas (TxT) app.
The 2025 inspection change
Texas overhauled vehicle inspections on January 1, 2025, under House Bill 3297. Non-commercial vehicles no longer need a separate safety inspection; renewal now includes a flat Inspection Program Replacement Fee of $7.50 a year ($16.75 for a new vehicle’s first two-year registration).
But 17 counties, Brazoria, Collin, Dallas, Denton, El Paso, Ellis, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Johnson, Kaufman, Montgomery, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, Travis, and Williamson, still require a passing annual emissions-only inspection before renewal, for gasoline vehicles model years 2 through 24. Electric, diesel, motorcycle, and moped vehicles are exempt. Bexar County joins the list November 1, 2026. Commercial vehicles keep the standard inspection statewide.
The online renewal window
You can renew online starting 90 days before your registration expires, up through 12 months after it expires. Beyond 12 months past expiration, official Texas pages don’t say what happens, so don’t assume the online path still works that far out.
