North Carolina car registration renews annually, and it isn’t billed alone: the state’s Tag & Tax Together program combines your annual vehicle registration fee and your county vehicle property tax into a single payment. You may legally keep driving for up to 15 days after your registration expires, but that’s an operating grace only, not a fee-free one: a late fee applies to any renewal paid after expiration, and interest starts accruing the month after your sticker expires.
Tag & Tax Together: one bill, two charges
Your renewal notice from the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) carries both your vehicle registration fee and your county’s vehicle property tax due, and you pay them together in one transaction. The tax portion isn’t fixed: it varies yearly based on your county’s assessed value for the vehicle. If you disagree with that value, the appeal goes to your county tax assessor, not NCDMV; NCDMV only handles the registration side.
The inspection-first rule
North Carolina requires a passing state inspection no more than 90 days before your registration expires, and that inspection has to be electronically on file before renewal, whether you renew online, at a kiosk, in person, or by mail. You cannot pay first and inspect later: the transaction simply won’t go through without a passing inspection already logged. Inspection fees are paid separately, directly to the inspection station.
The 15-day grace vs. the money clock
The 15-day window after expiration covers legal operation, not the bill. Once your renewal is paid after the expiration date, a late fee of up to $25 applies, charged beginning the first day of the month following expiration. Interest also starts: 5% for the rest of the month following your expiry month, then 0.75% per month until you pay. A separate rule for new vehicles, the 60-day property-tax deferral on a limited registration plate, has no grace period at all.
Renewing without the notice
Lost or never received your Tag & Tax Together notice? You only need the last 5 digits of your title number (printed on your registration card) and your license plate number. Renew at payments.ncdot.gov (the myNCDMV portal, powered by PayIt), which adds a flat $3 fee plus 1.85% card processing on top of what you owe. Online and mail renewals ship your new card and sticker within 20 business days; kiosk and in-person renewals issue the sticker on the spot.
