Florida car registration renewal: the birthday rule explained

Florida registration expires at midnight on your birthday. The birthday rule, grace window, and late fees explained.

In Florida, your car registration expires at midnight on the birthday of the first-listed owner on the title, not on a fixed calendar date. You choose either a 1-year or 2-year registration period when you renew, and the state lets you renew up to three months before that birthday. Company fleets, short-term rentals, mobile homes, and heavy trucks run on fixed annual periods instead, but for an individually owned passenger vehicle, your birthday is the deadline.

The birthday rule and your 3-month window

Florida ties registration to the owner, not the calendar. If the vehicle has more than one owner, the first-listed owner’s birthday is what counts. You can renew any time in the three months preceding your birth month, right up through midnight on your birthday, and choose whether the new registration runs for one year or two. Businesses and special classes use different fixed periods: companies and short-term rental fleets run June 1 to May 31, mobile homes run January 1 to December 31, and heavy trucks over 7,999 lbs, truck-tractors, and buses run December 1 to November 30.

Don’t count on a renewal notice

Some Florida county tax collectors send a courtesy renewal reminder, by mail or by email in lieu of mail under state law, but it is not required and not a statewide guarantee. You do not need a notice to renew: use the MyDMV Portal (also called GoRenew, at services.flhsmv.gov/virtualoffice), the MyFlorida mobile app, or any motor vehicle service center in person.

The grace window and the sliding late-fee scale

Florida doesn’t publish a standard “grace period” for regular registrations, but in practice no delinquent fee is assessed until the 11th calendar day of the month after your renewal was due, a de facto window of ten-plus days past month-end. Mail postmarked before the 11th isn’t penalized, and returning active-duty military stationed 35+ miles from home of record are exempt with orders. The first semiannual for-hire period (December 1 to May 31) has no grace at all. Once the delinquent fee kicks in, it’s a sliding scale by license tax amount: $5-$25 tax owed adds a $5 fee, over $25-$50 adds $10, over $50-$100 adds $15, over $100-$400 adds $50, over $400-$600 adds $100, and over $600 adds $250.

No inspection, but insurance and tolls can still block you

Florida requires no periodic safety or emissions inspection to renew a standard passenger vehicle. But valid Florida insurance, liability plus PIP, is checked electronically and is a hard prerequisite: renewal is refused without it. Since July 1, 2022, unpaid toll-violation stops also block renewal until they’re satisfied. Online and app renewal carry a small non-refundable convenience fee (about $2 on MyDMV Portal, $3.75 to $4 on the MyFlorida app), and the physical sticker ships in 7-10 business days, with your digital receipt covering the gap.

FAQ

When exactly does my Florida registration expire? At midnight on the birthday of the first-listed owner on the title, for an individually owned vehicle. You choose a 1-year or 2-year cycle when you renew.

Will I get a renewal notice in the mail? Maybe. Some county tax collectors send a courtesy reminder by mail or email, but Florida law doesn’t require it, so don’t rely on it arriving.

What happens if my registration lapses? No delinquent fee applies until the 11th day of the following month, but after that a sliding fee under Fla. Stat. 320.07(4) kicks in, from $5 up to $250 depending on your license tax. Valid insurance and any unpaid toll-violation stops must also be cleared before you can renew.
